Beauty Emergency: Rosacea Flare Up | September 2011

by DR. NICHOLAS PERRICONE

A nationally renowned Esthetician, today’s guest blogger, Sue is also endowed with an all-encompassing interest in holistic health. She brings to the Perricone MD Flagship Spa over a decade of professional experience in the fashion & beauty industry combined with rigorous training in the Eastern Healing Arts.

Rosacea can be one of the most difficult skin conditions to manage. It is a systemic problem due to chronic inflammation and can just "flare up" at unexpected times. Unfortunately, people who have Rosacea experience some difficult symptoms including: weakened collagen, clogged pores, and dilated capillaries, which can give the skin a red, and almost acne-like, rash.

Here are my tips to calm a flare up:

  • Follow Dr. Perricone’s anti-inflammatory diet.
  • Eat more Wild Alaskan Salmon and dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach and watercress. Complex carbs such as quinoa, beans, brown rice are a must!
  • Supplements are your nutritional safety net- increase your intake of Omega-3s, Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester. No harsh scrubs or chemicals to be used topically ever. Remember, over-exfoliating creates inflammation on the skin and damages the epidermis leading to advanced aging.
  • Decline from drinking alcohol, sugar, wheat, all sodas including diet, coffee, fried, spicy and processed fast food.

I can tell with my rosacea clients whether they’ve indulged on a night on the town drinking alcohol. The skin does not lie!

There is no "cure" for rosacea, but many of my clients who suffer from it find that Cold Plasma and the Acyl-Glutathione have significantly brought down inflammation in the skin, making their skin less red.

Beauty Secrets: Deep Pore Cleansing | August 2011

by DR. NICHOLAS PERRICONE

Being located amidst all the hustle and bustle of New York has its advantages, but it can take a toll on our skin! Car exhaust, pollution and other environmental toxins can build up on our skin leading to dull, congested complexions. It’s no wonder that one of our most popular facials we offer at the Flagship is the Deep Pore Cleansing Facial.

Here are some secrets for a deep pore cleanse at home:

  • Smart exfoliation: I’m a huge fan of the Cleansing Treatment Bar which contains Glycolic acid. Glycolic acid helps to dissolve the debris in pores and gives a beautiful clarity to the skin. With the Cleansing Treatment Bar, you get both a deep cleansing and exfoliation in one step. This is much more effective than a scrub that merely scratches the skin’s surface.
  • Decollete Neglect: I see this often. Don’t forget to pay attention your neck and chest! These areas show skin blemishes and aging just as much as your face does.
Cleanser and a Mask: you can actually leave the Cleansing Treatment Bar on for a few additional minutes as a deep pore cleansing mask.
  • Steam Wisely: If you choose to steam at home, do so for no more than 5-10 minutes. Otherwise, hopping in the shower with a mask on will provide similar benefits.
  • Don’t abuse the brush: Not everyone needs a cleansing brush. If you have active acne, they can actually spread the bacteria causing more breakouts. If you have a Clarisonic, ensure that you are using the appropriate brush head for your skin type and do not push the brush aggressively into your skin.

Perricone MD Esthetician Discusses DMAE and
the Secrets to Younger Looking Skin | August 2011

Q. Sue, you’ve worked in this field for over a decade. What do you notice about the skin of your Perricone clients?

A: "First off, I can tell someone if someone uses Perricone pretty quickly by looking at their skin and definitely by touching it. Perricone loyalists have much more pronounced muscle tone-it’s the DMAE! The skin appears thicker, as if there is just more collagen. It’s been amazing to see the differences in my longtime Client’s skin over the last 3 years. I have one client in her early 70’s who, I swear, could pass for late 40’s."

Q: What is your favorite Perricone product?

A: "Without a doubt, Cold Plasma! I am oily so its hard for me to find an anti aging product that won’t break me out. Cold Plasma has helped my skin tremendously with redness, broken capillaries around the nose, acne scarring and pigmentation issues. The best part is that I’ve seen rapid results-both for my skin and my client’s- I’m talking within a month in some cases."

Sue's Cold Plasma Tips:

Less is more when it comes to application, you only need a dime size amount. I recommend using it morning and night, instead of once per day.
